01 11 2012 You Say You Like Foster the People…
The internet, and particularly websites like this, have revolutionized the music industry. Before the days of internet blogging, iTunes, Pandora, and even Napster, the only way that an artist could really get noticed was by getting signed with a well-known record label that would market and push their content into mainstream media. Fortunately, those days are starting to come to an end thanks to the breakthrough that the internet world has made as a medium in allowing users to freely share and research information. It is a glorious time to be alive!
Thanks to internet music sites, artists like Foster the People – a group that would otherwise be unheard of today – are able to freely market their own music content to the world. If they are tactical in placing their content in the World Wide Web, the internet audience will reward them for their good work. And thus, songs like “Pumped Up Kicks” begin spreading like wildfire until it finally breaks into the Billboard Top 100. In other words, musicians are in more control of their own destiny than ever before thanks to the internet and the revolution of free and unrestricted content sharing.
However, I dare say that were it not for the song “Pumped Up Kicks,” the remainder of Foster the People’s self-titled album would go unnoticed. Because, let’s be honest, none of their other songs sound anything like “Pumped Up Kicks.” The steady beat, catchy lyrics, and overall aura of the song fit the status quo of summer 2011. This combination, in turn, propelled the group and its album into the limelight.
Unfortunately, there are still many artists still struggling for their share of the fame, even though they offer just as much talent as artists like Foster the People, less that one breakthrough song.
So, now that I have drawn you in by leading you to believe that I am going to reveal something astounding about Foster the People, let me reveal the real purpose of this article: to piggyback some similar, but not-so-famous artists on the same path to success that Foster the People used.
Let me start you off with a warm-up. The following song, brought to you by the group Oregon Bike Trails, probably relates more to the song “Pumped Up Kicks” than any of the others that I am going to show you. It offers the same steady beat, summer sound, and catchy chorus that, I believe, catapulted “Pumped Up Kicks” into the mainstream.
Oregon Bike Trails – “Cayucas”
So, how did you like it? Not too shabby, right?! And yet, it’s still missing some key element that is keeping it from launching ahead in the charts. What it is, I’m not sure. But, with the help of blogs like this and its readers, maybe it’s only a matter of time before we hear this group on every channel of the radio.
From here, I am going to be showing you groups that have similar sounds to the rest of Foster the People’s album. I’m talking about songs like “Houdini,” “Don’t Stop,” “Helena Beat,” etc.
The next song that I want to show you is from a group called Two Door Cinema Club. To me, it would compare to the likes of the song “I Would Do Anything For You” from Foster the People.
Two Door Cinema Club – “Something Good Can Work”
Again, why groups like this haven’t broken the stereotype of a “hit” song, we may never know. Because, as far as I’m concerned they offer the same great style that Foster the People do!
Alright, I’m going to calm down a little now and refocus. I’m sure you’re tired of hearing me go on and on about Foster the People. Or, maybe you’re not…but, regardless, I’m going to get back to the purpose of this article, which is to hopefully introduce you to some new great artists that maybe you haven’t heard before.
Next up, allow me to introduce you to (or not) the band Bombay Bicycle Club. This group, I think, has some real potential. I don’t know what it is about this song, but I just can’t seem to get enough of it!
Bombay Bicycle Club – “Shuffle”
Now, don’t tell me you didn’t enjoy that!
Moving on…if you’ve heard of groups like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Shiny Toy Guns, and haven’t heard of Phantogram, well, I think you’re really missing out on something truly amazing.
Phantogram – “Don’t Move”
Alright, I still have a lot of ground to cover, so I’m not going to waste any more time. Next on the list is The Naked and Famous. They remind me a lot of Passion Pit. If you haven’t heard of Passion Pit, you can leave now and return again once you’ve fully enriched your life with his magic.
The Naked and Famous - “Young Blood”
So…there you have it! Now, I really hope that I was able to tune you into some great songs with this article. Maybe if you share some of these artists with your friends, family and loved ones we can, collectively, afford them the same opportunities that artists the likes of Foster the People couldn’t have received were it not for similar efforts.
Now, there were a lot of songs that I didn’t get to write about. But, for the sake of time and space, I’m just going to list a few other songs that you might be interested in. And, if I introduced you to zero artists that you haven’t already heard about, then congratulations! You truly are an indie music connoisseur and you should join the blogging team.
Remember! If you like what you’re hearing on this blog, why not consider giving a little back to the artists themselves by visiting http://humanfankind.com/donate/?

Leave a comment01 09 2012 Penguin Prison

Meet Chris Glover (aka Penguin Prison), the jack-of-all-trades/I’ll-make-any-kind-of-music-you-request guy. From his experience in a punk band in high school, Alicia Keys’ gospel choir, a Hip-Hop co-op with Q-tip, and a college boy band coupled with music degrees from both Bard and the Professional Performing Arts School in New York City, he truly has become well-rounded in the art of music.
Penguin Prison – “Don’t F*ck With My Money”
His aspirations, you ask? Well, at the top of the list would be to work with Mr. Kanye West himself. His talents have been described as being somewhere between Prince and Michael Jackson. Unfortunately for him, his retro synth-pop is either too caught up in the past or too ahead of its time to really make headway in the charts.
Penguin Prison – “Something I’m Not”
You may have heard of him already or even seen his music come up in one of my other posts. Maybe you hate him already, or maybe you have found true love in his music (like I have). Regardless, I must say that his recently debuted self-titled album is fun, quirky, and truly diverse. From the sound advice given in “Don’t F*ck With My Money” to the wobbly bass line in “Something I’m Not,” to the sympathetic tones of “Someone Got Everything,” P.P. seems to have covered all the corners. In my mind, it’s rather refreshing to come across an artist who is more than just a one-trick pony.
Penguin Prison – “Someone Got Everything”
I highly recommend you download his album from iTunes. Right now it’s only $7.99 and I feel it is worth every last dime. If you were born or grew up in the 80′s, then I don’t see how you can’t be a fan of his retro synth-pop. Or, follow this link for a free Multi-Millionaire remix pack of his work.

Leave a comment01 08 2012 Artists to Watch in 2012 – Miike Snow

Miike Snow made their debut with a self-titled album in 2007. Since then, they have kind of disappeared in the music scene, much to the dismay of their fans. Who are they? Where have they been? And, most importantly, what is coming next?
To be clear, Miike Snow is not a man. It is a band. It consists of two Swedish producers – Christian Eriksson and Pontus Winnberg – and American singer/songwriter, Andrew Wyatt.
Miike Snow – “Burial”
Childhood friends, Eriksson and Winnberg performed together in many amateur bands during their elementary education years. After both independently moved to Stockholm they decided to team up again as the duo Bloodshy and Avant, respectively. The duo made headway after working with Britney Spears on her comeback album. They moved to New York City during the duration of the production to create the tracks “Toxic” and “My Prerogative.” Bloodshy and Avant would win a Grammy for their work on the album.
Miike Snow – “Animal”
After working with Britney, the duo decided they would like to produce some of their own original tracks. During their time in New York City, they became acquaintances with the American singer/songwriter Andrew Wyatt while he was working with his group at the time called the A.M. The threesome decided to get together to form the group Miike Snow, a band name inspired by a friend of Eriksson and Winnberg combined with the spelling of the Japanese Filmmaker Takashi Miike (pronounced me-ee-kay, although the band has adopted the common pronunciation of just “mike”).
Miike Snow – “Silvia”
After the production of their first album in 2007, things really started to take off for the trio in Europe. The group initially didn’t anticipate the album to become as popular as it did. Rather, they hoped that it would just be a fun side project to work on whilst in the midst of producing music for more well known artists. However, demand soon began to rise for the group to begin touring throughout Europe.
The group began traveling all over Europe putting on, what appears to be, some of the greatest rave concerts and light shows on planet Earth. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before the sound-waves would jump the big pond and land on American soil.
Unfortunately, the hype and popularity of the band grew, but the band members always had considered the group a side-project to their other endeavors. Apparently, there is more money making hit songs for big name artists like J-Lo and Kylie Minogue than pursuing a personal indie/pop label. So, they put the majority of their efforts into making songs for other people rather than growing their own band name.
The good news is, the band has finally started putting work back into their own sounds with a new album which is set to release in March of 2012. Below you’ll find their first single released from the album – a song titled “Devil’s Work.” Set the ticklers in your calendar for March and be sure that you are one of the first to spread the word about the album! You’ll definitely get props from your peers for doing so.

Leave a comment01 02 2012 The Season of Remixes and Collaborations

Let’s see….what do I love most about remixes? Well, to start, remix artists are typically not legally allowed to sell their remixed tracks, so that makes pretty much all of them free! Also, I love how a DJ or Producer can take a track and fill in the dull moments with fun effects, cool beats, or sweet mash-ups. Sometimes they turn a product that is better than the original. Other times, they completely destroy the song and make your ears bleed. I’m hoping that today I can guide you to some songs that fit the former.
I want to start with a collaborative effort between Beck and Feist. I have long heralded Beck as one of the most talented artists on the planet. I say this simply because, if you go through his album history, you’ll find multiple genres of music, and he’s usually able to turn out several hits. I’ve also always felt that he is ahead of his time. Generally, one isn’t truly able to appreciate some of his songs until years later when the status quo finally shifts in its direction.
Collaborating with Feist, another extremely talented artist, the two have been able to create a fun remix of Feist’s song “How Come You Never Go There.” Unfortunately, because this is a collaborative effort, they aren’t offering it for free (lame). But, I hope you can still appreciate the sound and maybe it just might be worth it to download it legally?
Feist – How Come You Never Go There (Beck Remix)
Alright, now that I’ve gotten the anti-piracy song out of the way, let me start introducing you to some songs that you can actually keep for free.
Tell me, have you ever heard the voice of an angel? I have. No, she doesn’t have wings, and at this moment in time she is in human form. However, when she crossed the veil of heaven and relocated to earth, she kept her angelic voice, thankfully. Her name is Ellie Goulding and she roams the streets of England. Recently she teamed up with the DJ/Producer Skrillex to produce an amazing track called “Summit.” Now, if I were blogging solely about that song, then I wouldn’t be able to promise free music. But, I already have, so let me segue into the dub-step lite remix of the song brought to you by Aylen which you can download for free. Then, maybe your curiosity will swing enough to download the real deal.

Now, let me move you onto what is probably one of the greatest collaborative groups today. RAC or Remix Artis Collective is a group of music producers who take the greatest hits of up and coming artists and put their own spin on it. I don’t know how they do it, but rarely do I find a track in their playlist that I don’t like. Here are a few that I think you should get.

Peter Bjorn and John – Second Chance (RAC Remix)

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – Home (RAC Remix)

2 Comments01 02 2012 Artists to Watch in 2012 – Star Slinger

The Manchester, UK based mix-master known as Star Slinger has been making headway in the music scene thanks, largely, to his mastery in remixing famous indie-pop songs like Alex Winston’s Sister Wife as well as a few popular artist songs like the Rihanna/Calvin Harris song Hopeless Place:

However, over the past year, he has been using his touch-up mixing skills to start creating some of his own unique original sounds. I think the genre that would best describe his style would be a hip-hop instrumental category, or something along those lines. Combining smooth tracks with foot tapping beats, Star Slinger has certainly gained a strong understanding of a protocol head-bobbing song, similar to what you would find in a true hip-hop song.
Star Slinger – Mornin’
Star Slinger – May I Walk With You
Enter 2012. This year, Star Slinger is starting to branch out to new grounds by producing 100% original tracks featuring various artists for vocals. In the following song titled “Dumbin’,” Star Slinger taps into his hip-hop and R&B experience and teams up with the artist Reggie B to premier his first of many future songs with new up-and-coming vocalists. You’ll want to keep an eye on Star Slinger as he releases future tracks this year.

2 Comments12 28 2011 Holy Ghost!

Holy Ghost! - Holy Ghost!
Holy $#*& it’s Holy Ghost!!
Alright you music lovers out there, please tell me you have heard the buzz about Holy Ghost!. Try this on for size, take a music style from any era of music, pop it into the blender that is Holy Ghost! and tell me it isn’t the greatest music smoothie you’ve ever poured into your ears. Delicious!
I’m going to start you off with the song that christened me into a huge fan (more innuendoes to come). The song title is “Do It Again”:
(hint: take this song anywhere by clicking on the arrow above)
I’ll be honest, the first time I heard this I completely overlooked it. I don’t know why! But, like the greatest stealth ninja to roam the earth, if you blink you might miss the mastery behind the music. It wasn’t until a friend reacquainted me with the song that humility struck and regret set in. I couldn’t believe I had missed out on what I now consider one of the greatest emerging artists of 2011! It’s not a dance song, or a chill song, but, rather, it falls into the genre of badassery. Every time I hear his music I can’t help but to straighten my posture, flex my muscles a little bit, and walk with a little more swagger. Case-in-point, let me introduce you to my next favorite, “Some Children”.
I was living in New York City when I heard this song. Needless to say I was doing a lot of walking and riding a lot of public transportation. “Some Children” worked its way into the shuffle mix on the iPod and something overcame me – a perfect synchronization between beat and walking pace. It was an amazing phenomenon. It was almost like I couldn’t control it. The power of the Holy Ghost! had overcome me and I truly felt a haughty demeanor overcome me. I had become better than everyone around me. I dare you to try it!
I could go on and on about my opinion about this artist. But, for the sake of avoiding repetition, I’ll just tell you to go buy the album.

1 Comment12 28 2011 Gardens & Villa – Thorn Castle

Gardens & Villa-Thorn Castle
“When I was young, my mom said go down to the river bed”
What a great song to listen to when you want to reminisce on your childhood play days. I’m not entirely sure what Gardens & Villa had in mind when they wrote this song, but, to me, it reminds me of a childhood play date with the girl next door before things like dating and relationships made things complicated.
Hailing from Santa Barbara, CA, Gardens & Villa is definitely one of those bands that is fast on the rise. They create a lot of different music sounds with their track list on their self-titled album that released in July. Have a listen to their track below and let your imagination slowly creep back into your mature adult life.
